NHS DENTAL TREATMENT COSTS

If you pay for NHS dental treatment, the cost will depend on the type of treatment your dental professional recommends. Before starting any treatment, your dentist will always explain what’s needed and confirm the cost with you.

NHS dental treatments are divided into three bands, each with a set fee. If your treatment includes procedures from more than one band, you’ll only pay for the highest band that applies. If you need multiple treatments within the same band, you’ll only pay that band charge once.

NHS Band 1

£27.40
  • Covers an examination, diagnosis, and advice. It may also include:
  • ✔️ X-rays (if clinically required)
  • ✔️ Application of fluoride varnish
  • ✔️ Simple gum disease treatment, such as scaling (professional cleaning)
  • ✔️ Impressions or moulds of your teeth
  • ✔️ Minor adjustments to dentures or braces, such as smoothing rough edges or tightening clasps

NHS Band 2

£75.30
  • Includes all treatments in Band 1, plus additional procedures such as:
  • ✔️Fillings
  • ✔️Root canal treatment for infection or inflammation
  • ✔️Tooth extractions and minor oral surgery
  • ✔️Sealants to protect teeth from decay
  • ✔️Adjustments or additions to dentures, such as adding a clasp or tooth
  • ✔️Bite-raising appliances (excluding laboratory-made appliances)
  • ✔️More extensive gum disease treatment

NHS Band 3

£326.70
  • Includes all treatments in Bands 1 and 2, plus more complex procedures such as:
  • ✔️ Crowns (caps that cover and protect teeth)
  • ✔️ Inlays and onlays to restore damaged teeth
  • ✔️ Dentures made of plastic or metal
  • ✔️ Bridges to replace missing teeth
  • ✔️ Orthodontic treatments like braces
  • ✔️Other custom-made dental appliances (not including sports guards)

NHS TREATMENTS FREE OF CHARGE

You do not have to pay a dental charge:

  • if you are having stitches removed
  • if your dentist has to stop bleeding from your mouth
  • if your dentures need repair. However, if it isn’t possible to repair your dentures and you need new ones then you’ll have to pay for this with a Band 3 charge

The NHS will not provide cosmetic treatments such as teeth whitening, which you may want to make your teeth more attractive, but which are not clinically necessary. Even where treatment is clinically necessary the dentist will offer you a treatment option that is clinically appropriate. If you choose to have alternative treatment options then you will have to pay privately for these.
